Training

What We Are About

LIGHT began training health care workers in East Asia in 2003, when a 3-year family medicine training program was started. As the context changed and domestic general practice residencies developed, LIGHT’s program evolved into a 12-month Family Medicine fellowship for local graduates of East Asian accredited residencies. More than 26 physicians have completed LIGHT’s training over the past 20 years.

In 2020, LIGHT also began an allied health training program, focusing on equipping local staff as physical and occupational therapists and assistants, social workers, and special education instructors. We also train community volunteers in these skills to augment the care and services provided to patients.

LIGHT also welcomes foreign physicians and other health professionals such as nurses, occupational, physical and speech therapists, social workers, and special education teachers to get involved, either by coming for a short term trip and presenting a training workshop, or participating in online teaching with local staff. We also welcome those considering long term service opportunities to consider this opportunity!

The training activities take place in an East Asian province, including at our outpatient primary care clinic, area nursing homes, and a day center for children with special needs. It is our hope to impact the next generation of family physicians and allied health care providers by multiplying the pool of holistic-minded professionals serving in this country.

Service Learning and Teaching Opportunities

Short Term & Long Term Training

We can provide 2-4 week global health rotations and clerkships for medical, nursing, and allied health students and residents, with the oversight of American licensed physicians and occupational therapists. We also welcome you to offer lectures and training workshops for local staff in your area of expertise. If you would like to come for 1-2 years and serve with our team, please contact us.

Remote Opportunities

We have a growing pool of medical and allied health colleagues who volunteer by giving online lectures, as well as provide consultations and practical guidance to staff. If you would like to join this team of remote faculty, contact us.
