Loving Laughter

Children’s Day Center

Our History

LIGHT is partnering with the Loving Laughter Children’s Day Center, which was started in September 2022 to address the needs of disabled children who live with their parents in the community.

Over the past years, as LIGHT realized how frequently children with disabilities were relinquished into state-run institutional care, the vision to see a reproducible day program supporting children with special needs was born. The program is the fruit of LIGHT’s service to vulnerable families, aiming to offer children with disabilities the training, therapy and educational support they need to help them meet their full potential.

LIGHT provides a multidisciplinary assessment for each child that applies to enter the program at the international clinic, which includes a comprehensive medical evaluation, assessment by our occupational therapist, as well as special education input when needed. Each child receives an individualized treatment plan that is then implemented by trained local staff at the Day Center. Through direct care and training of children, as well as offering respite and training to parents, the goal is to increase the quality of life for the children and their families. Children learn self-care, psycho-social skills, academics, and physical and speech therapy with trained providers. LIGHT’s social workers work closely with the staff and families of the Day Center to help the children access government and community resources that are available to them.

The initial phase of the project has shown the need for this type of program, with enthusiastic response from clients and parents. Trained community volunteers from businesses and other social organizations participate regularly offering enrichment activities that support the children’s treatment goals, and this has led to increased connection between the Day Center families and people in the local community. Various civic organizations, schools, and businesses in the city have also begun to partner with the Day Center, leading to increased understanding and acceptance as people learn to interact with disabled children and their parents.
